Accessibility statement

This is an accessibility statement from the City of Ballarat & Tourism Midwest Victoria.

Measures to support accessibility

The City of Ballarat & Tourism Midwest Victoria takes the following measures to ensure accessibility of the Visit Ballarat website:

  • Include accessibility throughout our internal policies.
  • Integrate accessibility into our procurement practices.
  • Assign clear accessibility goals and responsibilities.

Key components such as the colour choices, contrast ratios, text scaling and mobile icon touchpoints have all been designed and developed with accessibility at the forefront.

The structure of pages has also considered screen readers during development to ensure best practices have been followed (e.g. appropriate H1, H2, H3 structures).

Alt text has also been added for images where possible.

It is important to note that some components and media (e.g. images) shown are provided by external tourism operators and displayed throughout the website via the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse (ATDW) API.

This means that images are uploaded at the operators’ discretion and may not always adhere to the design template of the website.

Both ATDW and Tourism Midwest Victoria have provided guidelines and recommendations of optimal image sizes and resolutions.

Conformance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.

It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.

Visit Ballarat is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level A.

Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.

The City of Ballarat & Tourism Midwest Victoria are also committed to continual improvement in achieving higher levels of conformance with the WCAGs.

Acknowledgement of Country

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities. These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years. As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
