Start your Ballarat-Pyrenees road trip with hot cup of coffee - and maybe a pastry!
Named after Ballarat’s first restaurateur, Johnny Alloo is loved by locals and visitors alike for its St Ali and Proud Mary coffee. After a quick pit stop at the historic 1870s building, it’s time to hit the road for the 30-minute drive to the beautiful Pyrenees region.
Enjoy lunch at The Springs Hotel
The Springs Hotel in Waubra nails good country hospitality. Grab a seat by the fire for a classic pub meal, washed down with a cold beer or a glass of red to get you in the spirit of what’s to come.
Visit the Avoca Silo
The Avoca silo is the first and only glow-in-the-dark artwork on the Australian Silo Art Trail. It depicts the Australian barking owl, a bird native to the local Pyrenees Ranges.
Experience the regions top drops. First winery stop: Summerfield Winery
For more than 40 years, the Summerfield family has been growing grapes in their Pyrenees vineyard and transforming them into deep, hearty, bold reds. Pay a visit to Summerfield Winery‘s cellar door and cafe to try their award-winning reds, wood-fired pizzas and stone-baked artisan polish sourdough.
Secondary winery stop: Taltarni Vineyard
One of the Pyrenees’ pioneering wineries, Taltarni is dedicated to making exceptional wines from the unique terroir of the region. It utilisies innovative new world techniques to produce a diverse range of high-calibre still red and white wines, along with methode-traditionnelle crafted sparkling wines.
Third and final winery stop: Dalwhinnie Wines
Dalwhinnie wine maker Julian Langworthy is regarded as one of Australia’s most talented winemakers, with a swag of awards including James Halliday’s Winemaker of the Year, a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, and Ray Jordan’s Winemaker of the Year. Enjoy one of his delicious wines and cheeseboards whilst taking in the stunning views across the vineyard and the classic Pyrenees backdrop.
Dine at a beautifully restored Victorian era pub
The Avoca Hotel is far from your average country pub. The menu offers dishes such as roasted spatchcock, grilled roo fillet and local herb-fed lamb. Eating at The Avoca Hotel is a tasting of the region, particularly with the wine – the owners only stock the wine if it is grown in the region.
