There's nothing quite like becoming one with nature.
Avid explorers rejoice, here's the 5 best ways to explore Ballarat's great outdoors...
The 34-metre Lal Lal Falls is believed to be the earthly home of Bunjil, the All Father or Creator to most Victorian Aboriginal tribes, making it one of Victoria's most significant cultural sites.
Whether you prefer getting off-road or you're after a challenge, there's a smorgasbord of cycling trails awaiting your discovery across the Ballarat region. From mountain biking at Black Hill and Djuwang Baring, to the 118km rail trail linking Ballarat and Skipton, there's an adventure to suit your riding style.
Surrounded by extinct volcanoes and old forests, you'll definitely find a hike to get your heart pumping. For short trails, try Mount Buninyong, La Gerche or Lake Wendouree. For half-day hikes, don't miss Werribee Gorge or Lerderderg.
Fly over Ballarat for the best bird's-eye view of the city. Closer to the ground, the views from the lookout at Black Hill and Woowookarung are also pretty impressive.
Watch the swans as you take a leisurely stroll along Lake Wendouree's 6km track, or picnic among seasonal displays at one of Australia's most significant cool climate gardens, the Ballarat Botanical Gardens.
