5 ways to explore the great outdoors in Ballarat

There's nothing quite like becoming one with nature.

Avid explorers rejoice, here's the 5 best ways to explore Ballarat's great outdoors...

Admire the beauty of Lal Lal Falls

The 34-metre Lal Lal Falls is believed to be the earthly home of Bunjil, the All Father or Creator to most Victorian Aboriginal tribes, making it one of Victoria's most significant cultural sites.

Cycle your way around the region

Whether you prefer getting off-road or you're after a challenge, there's a smorgasbord of cycling trails awaiting your discovery across the Ballarat region.

Head out on a short hike

Surrounded by extinct volcanoes and old forests, you'll definitely find a hike to get your heart pumping.

Check out Ballarat from above

Fly over Ballarat for the best bird's-eye view of the city. Closer to the ground, the views from Black Hill lookout are also pretty impressive.

Explore Lake Wendouree and the Ballarat Botanical Gardens

Watch the swans as you take a leisurely stroll along Lake Wendouree's 6km track, or picnic among seasonal displays at one of Australia's most significant cool climate gardens, the Ballarat Botanical Gardens.

Acknowledgement of Country

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities. These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years. As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
