Campbell Addy to headline 2025 Ballarat International Foto Biennale

Women in Drapery by Jawara, Campbell Addy, 2023

Acclaimed British-Ghanaian artist and photographer Campbell Addy will front the 2025 Ballarat International Foto Biennale.

In an Australian premiere, his major solo exhibition I ❤ Campbell will headline the globally-renowned photography festival from 23 August until 19 October next year.

As a Black, queer, ex-Jehovah’s Witness, Campbell grew up in a hyper visible world, with his photographs drawing inspiration from his culturally diverse upbringing.

The likes of Kendall Jenner, FKA Twigs, Dr Naomi Campbell, Tyler the Creator and more have appeared in front of his lens, to be seen on magazine covers around the world.

I ❤ Campbell will feature a newly-conceived set of images, original paintings and a short film shot on location in Ghana, reflecting a personal meditation on the artist’s roots and inspiration.

Also on the cards for the 2025 Foto Biennale is the official opening of Ballarat's National Centre for Photography in historic Lydiard Street, providing a new space for photography, exhibitions, art and ideas.

"Our aim is to become a year-round destination for artists and audiences to inspire, create and partake in the culture of photography,” Ballarat International Foto Biennale CEO Vanessa Gerrans said.

The full program will be released in mid-2025.

Acknowledgement of Country

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities. These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years. As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
