Top national gong for Ballarat beer

A Ballarat brew has been crowned Australia’s best independent beer.

Dollar Bill Brewing’s Gold Teeth was named Champion Australian Independent Beer at the 2023 Australian Independent Beer Awards (The Indies) on 23 August.

The barrel-aged peach sour ale also won the Champion Sour, Fruit & Funk category.

In addition, Dollar Bill took home:

  • silver for Candy Paint and Brambalama (both in the Sour, Fruit & Funk category)
  • bronze for Ballarat Steam Ale (Speciality Beer)

Fellow Ballarat brewer O’Brien Beer scored:

  • gold for O’Brien Stout and O’Brien Brown Ale (both in the Speciality Beer category)
  • silver for O’Brien XPA, O’Brien Belgian Ale, O’Brien Lager and O’Brien Pale Ale (Speciality Beer)
Cubby Haus Brewing

And the city’s Cubby Haus Brewing snapped up bronze for:

  • English Oatmeal Stout (British-Style Ale)
  • Sixty Shilling Scottish Light (Porter/Stout)

Presented by the Independent Brewers Association, the competition featured 1348 beers from 190 Australian breweries.

It formed part of BrewCon at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre.
